On October 10, St. Edward will transform into a tropical paradise to accommodate the 13th Annual Wings Auction. The Wings Auction is an annual fundraiser that includes dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, and much more, all supporting the students of St. Edward High School. This year’s theme is Escape To Paradise. “We want it to feel like our guests have just stepped into a tropical resort,” says Mr. John Goers, Director of Physical Plant and Grounds at St. Edward. To further add to the paradise feel, all the student ambassadors who valet and serve at this event will be fully clad in Hawaiian t-shirts.
Financially, the Wings Auction is very important to St. Edward High School and serves as one of its main fundraisers. Every year close to 350 people at $125 a plate attend Wings. Attendees include alumni, faculty, parents of current students, and others associated with the St. Edward community. In the twelve years of its existence, Wings has raised over $2,200,000 for the school. This money supports the financial aid scholarships and merit scholarships the school is able to provide. Roughly 350 people are expected to attend this year. This year’s Wings Auction will cost $45,000 to run, but it should generate a profit of up to $160,000. When asked if the slump in the economy would affect the event, Mr. Goers said, “ We understand people have to make cut-backs in this economy, we just hope it isn’t in the charities they contribute to. We have experienced losses from certain companies that help donate items to the Wings Auction, and help endorse it; however, we are expecting a great turnout. It’s for a great cause.”
