After suffering a devastating loss to St. Ignatius at Westwood Country Club on September 28, the St. Edward Varsity Golf Team geared up for Sectionals held at the Legacy Course at Sweetbriar Golf Club in Avon Lake on October 6.
The team posted great scores at Sectionals including a 78 from sopho- more Brian Bir and a 79 from junior Zach Champa. The overall team score of 327 put the varsity team in 4th place of 15 teams. This strong performance sent the Eagles to Districts, which took place at Pine Hills Golf Course in Hinckley.
The team score at Districts was 334, placing the varsity team 10th out of 20 teams. The team accomplished its goal of advancing to Districts and finishing in the top 10. Zach Champa’s 76 put him in a 3-player playoff for the last qualify- ing individual not on an advancing team. Champa came up short in the playoff forthe final advancing position but finished with the 5th best individual score.
Although the team fell short of their ultimate goal of advancing to the State Tournament, sophomore Brian Bir looks back on what was a good season. “Overall our team performed well this year. We had the potential to get to the state tournament, but didn’t put four scores together down the stretch. In gen- eral, the year was successful with some ups and downs. We’re looking forward to next year and should have a very competi- tive team.”
Next season, the contributions of the four seniors will be missed as this was the final season of golf at St. Edward for Mike Ols, Joe Devries, Kevin Heisser and Bryan Willard. Even with the loss of the seniors the varsity team has the potential to do great things next season with a good group of players moving up from the JV along with the return of Junior Zach Champa and sophomore Brian Bir.
