Of all the clubs at St. Edward, Model UN is one of the most challenging. Nearly every year since the 1950’s, members of the (St. Edward) Council on World Affairs or SECWA have participated in competitions around Ohio and the U.S.
The object of the club is for students to represent delegates from vari- ous countries to the United Nations. Each member must become an expert on his country’s position for the topic. There are three or four competitions a year and at the end of each one, students work with representatives from other schools to create possible solutions to the problems with which they are presented. They then send their results to the actual United Nations.
Omar Madhun ’11 is a new member of the club . When asked why he joined he replied, “A bunch of my friends said it was fun. It will also help me prac- tice public speaking.” Mr. James Wallen- horst, the club moderator, is as excited as Omar. He has been in charge of the Model UN for the last ten years. “The students are the ones who do all the work,” he says, “I just collect the permission slips and coordinate the busses.” In reality, Mr. Wal- lenhorst also teaches the club members how to approach and execute their papers and resolutions.
