Belying his quiet and studious nature, Kevin Vogel ’10 is making lots of noise in Northeast Ohio. Kevin’s musical talents are being developed as a key oboe player in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. This elite group comprises 110 students from 14 counties, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. Kevin’s performance of George Frideric Handel’s Oboe Sonata earned him a place in the orchestra, where he routinely plays 2nd chair or 1st assistant.
The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra annually plays three concerts in Severance Hall and at least three “outreach” performances throughout the greater Cleveland area. Its first public concert on November 22 at Severance Hall will feature Roman Carnival Overture by Hector Berlioz; Suite from Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland; and Symphony No. 4 by Johannes Brahms. Additional concerts are scheduled for March and May in Severance Hall.
Kevin does not limit his musical focus to this elite group. As a member of the pit orchestra and concert, marching, and jazz bands, Kevin has played the clarinet, oboe, tenor saxophone, and English horn. His fellow band seniors recognized Kevin’s outstanding contributions to the Class A Superior ranked ensemble by naming him marching instructor at the beginning of the school year.
Kevin also serves as stage manager for the upcoming Edwardian Players production of Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? He hopes to continue his musical studies at Yale University or the Oberlin Conservatory in the fall.
