St. Edward Soccer Shows Early Season Inconsistencies

Written by Connor Roth '11 on September 20, 2009.

With five of the seventeen regular season games behind them, the St. Edward varsity soccer team has a current record of 2-2-2. The season has started as a mixed bag of sorts for the Eagles.

In its most recent game last Saturday, the team traveled to Green and posted a disappointing 0-0 tie. Hopes ran high after the Eagles posted an impressive 3-0 victory over Solon on September 5 at home. Although the start to the season was below the team’s expectations, the team rebounded nicely in the Solon game.

Before the Solon victory, the Eagles suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat to Padua in less than ideal conditions and also lost a tough game against state title contender Strongsville, 1-0.

The team opened the season with a classic scoreless tie against Bay High School but followed that game up with a thrilling 2-1 victory in the home opener against Hoban. Senior Eric Haecker scored the game-winning goal with ten minutes remaining on an assist from senior Pat Murray.

Tough practices and leadership from the seniors are helping the team unite to look forward to their biggest game of the year, against St. Ignatius on September 23. Senior team captains Pat Murray and Kevin Spackman are leading the team to settle for nothing but the best this year. Ian Stalker provides some ferocious defending, and some speed down the lines comes from Eric “Hack-Daddy” Haecker and Christian “Cecil” Iacullo. Goalie Toby Froelich is developing into one of Northeast Ohio’s premier players and has already posted three shutouts.

Even though the Eagles are considered an underdog this year, the team has high hopes for a playoff run into late October.
