I know what you’re thinking, “Another zombie movie?” Well, Zombieland is anything but another zombie film rehash. Right from the get go it drops you into the world as narrated by the somewhat nerdy Columbus, (Jesse Eisenberg) who is named after his hometown of Columbus; Ohio (it’s worth noting that most of the characters are named after the place they are going to), as he goes down a list of tips that helped him survive the infection. Despite his preparation and precautions, Columbus isn’t exactly the greatest zombie killer in the business, but once he joins forces with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) it ceases to be an issue. After a bit of a rough start, they add two sisters, Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), to their team as they fight their way across the country.
Sure, there are great action scenes with pounding music and gratuitous amounts of gore, but that’s not what makes the movie great (although, it certainly doesn’t hurt). The real greatness shows in the ever-present humor that never slows down or stops even for some of the more somber scenes. Every joke is perfectly timed and there are plenty of amusingly awkward moments. Arguably the greatest and most hilarious part of the movie, and the scene that everyone seems to be talking about, involves a cameo from an old veteran, Bill Murray.
Zombieland meets every expectation and surpasses many. It’s a refreshing revival of the zombie-comedy side of the dark apocalyptic concept.
