Mock Trial Starts at SHES

Written by Bradley Ouambo '10 on October 7, 2009.

As one of the newest clubs at St. Edward, Mock Trial already has over 40 members. Mrs. Suzanne Fairfield introduced the idea last year and a team was put together; however, the first year was a building year and the students did not compete in any events. This year, Mrs. Fairfield has high aspirations. “The Debate Team was one of the crown jewels of this school and I hope that the Mock Trial team can continue that legacy,” said Mrs. Fairfield. When the team was first put together a St. Edward alumni group called the “Legal Eagles,” headed by Judge John J. Russo ’83, offered to help prepare the team.

What is Mock Trial exactly? It is a trial simulation where students on each team will play as attorneys, witnesses, and jurors.  The competing teams take turns as the prosecution and as the defense in either a civil or criminal case. Teams are given the trial information ahead of time and the members have to memorize legal terms and witness accounts

The St. Edward Mock Trial boys will be divided into three separate teams, each with its own captain. The goal of this program is to teach students about the justice system and to help build teamwork, research, and analytical skills.
